Beyond authoritarianism : Migration, uncertainty and sense of belonging among public intellectuals
Abstract
Ethnographic fieldwork is used by means of interviews, observation and document analysis. The chapter has an anthropological approach to studying small places in order to discuss larger societal issues and argues that these individuals are transnational and cosmopolitan both as a necessity and as a reaction to tribalised mechanisms in their countries of origin. The situation of living outside the homogenizing nation-states stimulates reflections on migration, academic freedom, democracy and sense of belong to globalized communities.
