Grid Supporting VSCs in Power Systems with Varying Inertia and Short-Circuit Capacity

Abstract

Voltage Source Converters (VSCs) can offer various control strategies to enable realization of the vision of a “Global Grid”. With the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources, it is becoming more frequent for VSCs to be required to provide active and reactive power regulation. In this paper, a model of a grid-supporting VSC connected to a weak AC grid with low Short Circuit Capacity (SCC) and low inertia is presented. The impact of SCC and inertia is then illustrated by means of small-signal stability, H2 norm and large-disturbance analysis.
