Investigating a large outbreak of salmonellosis in the US involving fresh produce

Abstract

Fresh produce is an important part of a healthy diet. However, produce is susceptible to contamination with pathogens. Identifying the food vehicle responsible for an outbreak is critical to minimizing the public health and economic impacts of an outbreak. Identifying the food vehicle and its source may also help prevent future outbreaks. The case study describes an especially challenging investigation of an outbreak of salmonellosis that occurred in the US in 2008.
