The Open Window

In 2014 Alfred set out on a new journey into the potential of the internet's ability for facilitating learning and knowledge sharing. Together with Daniel Oxenhandler and William Sloan, they took a trip to India, to dive into the initiative called "School in the Cloud", teaching girls from the slum through "grannies" on Skype and Google. The three followed two girls from the slum, Jaya & Deepa, growing and learning in a whole new way, due to the internet.

The knowledge they gathered grew into a documentary film, supported by Roskilde University and the Carlsberg Foundation.

ABOUT the Documentary

As India races to bring its entire population online, Deepa and Jaya - two girls from a low-income community in Delhi - are introduced to the internet for the first time through an internet learning lab at their school. Their time in the lab opens up a whole universe of new ideas, possibilities, and perspectives, and provides them new ways of thinking about learning, about themselves and about the world around them. When the lab is threatened to be closed down and they are forced to consider the implications of having their internet access taken away, their stories provide an intimate reflection on the transformative potential of the internet, and how it affects our sense of self, and our relationships with family, culture and society.

This is the full documentary film, released in 2018.
